Policy - Medical Council of Canada Evaluating Exam

Note:

Under the registration and licensing regulations,  section 5. (2), the College may grant a provisional licence for primary care practice to a person who applies for a licence and:

"(a) has a degree in medicine from an approved faculty or school of medicine;

(b) has completed one year of postgraduate basic clinical training;

(c) has

(i) satisfactorily completed the evaluating examination of the Medical Council of Canada, according to the standard in subsection (2.1), not more than 5 years immediately before the date of making the application for a licence, or ..."

January 1, 2010 to Current

Starting on January 1, 2010, the Medical Council of Canada introduced a new reporting method for the Medical Council of Canada Evaluating Exam  (MCCEE).

As a result of this change, the College requires applicants who completed the Evaluating Examination after January 1, 2010 to submit to the College a copy of the Statement of Results and the Supplemental Feedback Report for consideration.

The College will consider the applicants total score as well as the MCCEE profile by patient groups, clinical task and disciplines in Figures 1 through 6 of the Supplemental Feedback Report.

To be eligible to apply for licensure, the applicant must have:

  • a total score of 300 or greater;
  • obtained a score with the solid line within each shaded band falling within the high performance level in Figures 1, 2, and 3; and
  • scores in Figures 4, 5, and 6 in all content areas equal to the 3rd quintile or greater.

To be eligible to apply for the Clinical Skills Assessment and Training Program (CSAT), the applicant must have

  • obtained a total score of 271 or greater:
  • obtained a score with the solid line within each shaded band falling within the border line performance level in Figures 1, 2, and 3; and
  • obtained scores in Figures 4, 5, and 6 in at least 8 of the 14 content areas equal to the 3rd quintile or greater and no more than 6 content areas in the 2nd quintile.

To be eligible to apply for Educational Registration, the applicant must have obtained a total score of 250.

January 2007 to December 2009

Starting in January 2007, the Medical Council of Canada adopted new score results for the MCCEE. The new Medical Council of Canada passing score for the MCCEE will be 250 and not 303 which was the passing score on the MCCEE prior to January 2007.

For applicants applying for entry to postgraduate training and for entry to CSAT, the College will continue to require the Medical Council of Canada passing score of 303 for the MCCEE written after May 2002 and before January 2007. The College will accept the new Medical Council of Canada passing score of 250 for the MCCEE written after January 1, 2007.

As a result of the new scores on the MCCEE, the College has had to revise the College's satisfactory scores for provisional licensure. The following College satisfactory scores will apply to the MCCEE taken after January 1, 2007:
